How Loss Reinforces the Importance of FamilySo the unthinkable happened. We all knew it would eventually happen but couldn’t and didn’t want to ever think about it. The matriarch of our family, my husband’s grandmother who we all called Nun, passed away. I can’t say it was a total surprise, as she had been sick for the past two months. Regardless, it was something no one could ever prepare for.

Nun’s Legacy

Nun had three great-grandchildren, three grandchildren, and three daughters. She did not have an easy life and put everyone’s needs ahead of hers. As we were all devastated by this great loss, it put a lot of things into perspective and made me realize how important family really is as well as how lucky we all were to have her in our lives.

Nun was the best role model on how to live your life to it’s fullest. She made the best out of bad situations. She was the perfect example of how everyone should live their lives. Nun was wise, strong and loved beyond words. This was shown by the hundreds of people who came to say their goodbyes. Through the stories we heard, the impact she had was great. Her home was a second home to many of those outside of our family.

However, now that her home is empty, we as a family have to come together to deal with this loss. If we didn’t have each other to lean on, we never would get through this. And it doesn’t stop there. None of our lives will ever be the same. There will always be a void, something missing from every holiday, birthday, family gathering. But we have to keep going, for Nun. That’s what she would want. She wouldn’t want us to be sad, to stop our lives for her. We now have to live our lives like she lived hers. We have to continue her legacy.

The Importance of Family

This is what family does. They are there through good and bad. A family is there to celebrate the highs and give support when it is needed the most. Without family, I don’t know where I would be right now. They don’t ever judge you. They are there for you no matter what without hesitation. I think I already knew this, but having gone through this loss really reiterated it for me.

Amid the sadness that our family feels right now, in a strange way it is also encouraging. I have always known that I have a great family that I can count on in any circumstance. We have been lucky up until now to not have to test this theory out. Now that we have been tested, I know that we have passed and can get through anything together. I feel truly blessed that I have a family that I know will always support me through tough times as I will them.
